In my humble opinion, I went to the COOLEST PLACE ON EARTH to spend new years: the westernmost beach in the westernmost island in the westernmost ocean east of the date line. We were 20 km from the date line. That means that we were the LAST people in the whole wide world to see the sunset and the last people to welcome 2009. Pretty cool, huh? A bunch of PCVs (Peace Corps Volunteers) went – there were about 20 of us. I took a taxi, bus, boat and taxi to get there and it took about 6 hours to make the trip from my house to the beach (called Falealupo). The first night there we stayed in Beach Fales (little huts on the beach that looked like this:
This was everyone who came to Falealupo with us – all of us are PCVs:
Finally the sun set and although there were many clouds it was possible the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen.
The youth group at the church in the village came to perform for us after dinner. In the biggest coincidence I ever remember, the Peace Corps trainer that taught my group our dances during training was also in Falealupo that night! (his wife is from there). He suggested that our group also dance for the youth group and I vehemently agreed so I told our group to get ready to perform. We had not rehearsed our dance in weeks, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be! There is a PCV named Spencer living in Falealupo and another one named Jenny living in the next village over. They generously hosted us in their homes on our second night. The next morning there was a predicament with 17 people trying to fit in a 15 person cab. I didn’t have any plans that day besides going home (and ending the vacation) so I volunteered to take the bus even though it’s a 3.5 hour ride. Funny thing about busses around the holidays though, the driver decided not to drive the bus that day so it didn’t come. I ended up staying at Jenny’s place another night with another girl. It was a nice relaxing day full of resting and pineapple salad – mmmmm. We ended up taking the bus the next day. We got up at 3:30 AM because we were told the bus would be there at 4, but then it didn’t come until 5. It was cool to ride the bus around the island while the sun was rising, although I can see how that novelty would wear off if I lived there like Jenny does. The bus drives right by my friend Supy’s house, so I decided to get off the bus there and stay the night at Supy’s. I had already extended the vacation one night, so I thought – what’s one more? I arrived at Supy’s at 7 AM and we both went back to bed until noon. We went to visit Paul and Dan, two other volunteers nearby who are at the same school as each other. The next day it was really rainy and Supy and I were really busy watching movies, so I just had to stay another night. Finally on January 5th I took the boat back to the other island and came home. I had planned for a 2 night new years mini-vacation and it turned in to a 6 night laziness fest. Coming back home though I feel very motivated to get to work, which was not the feeling I had before leaving. I guess I needed that time to recharge because I am excited about work now! Speaking of work, I am going to go to the computer lab on my campus now and try to fix some broken computers. Although many of you probably think I am the nerdiest person you know, I guarantee there are nerdier people out there. It is unsure if I have the hardware skills to actually fix computers… but since I am the only one here, I guess I will just have to learn how. Wish me luck! |
By the way, the pictures come through beautifully and aren't cut off on the right.
Suggestion if possible: Could you make your lines shorter on your main articles as the sidebar box covers up the end of your story on the right hand side and I have to guess how the lines end. Am I the only one who has this problem?
